Greek Passport Requirements for Dual Citizens

If you already have Greek citizenship — whether through Greek citizenship by descent, ancestry, or marriage — the next step to fully enjoy your rights as a Greek and EU citizen is to apply for a Greek passport. A Greek passport allows dual citizens Greece–USA and other nationals to live, work, travel, study and retire freely across the European Union. Below you will find the official Greek passport requirements and what you need to know before submitting your application.

To get a Greek passport, you must first legally obtain Greek citizenship and be fully registered in the Greek Municipal Records (Dimotologio). If your Greek dual citizenship has not yet been finalized, or if there are errors in your Greek birth registration, marriage registration, or personal details, the passport cannot be issued until these issues are corrected. Many delays occur because names, dates of birth, or family details do not match foreign records — something our office resolves daily for clients abroad.

Once your Greek nationality is confirmed and you are properly registered, the next step is to obtain a Greek Police ID card, which is required before you can apply for a Greek passport. Both the ID and the passport require in-person verification, either in Greece or at a Greek Consulate. Applicants must also provide valid identification, biometric fingerprints, photos, and pay the state fees. For Greek dual citizenship holders with US, UK, Canadian, Australian or other nationality, the process remains fully legal and recognized.

For minors, parental consent is required. In all cases, the applicant’s personal information must match exactly across all records. If your foreign passport or birth certificate shows a different spelling or name format than your Greek records, this often requires a legal correction of Greek records before a Greek passport may be issued.

A Greek passport is valid for a set number of years and must be renewed before expiry. Dual citizens are free to travel using either passport; however, when entering or leaving Greece, it is strongly recommended to use your Greek passport so you are correctly recognized as a Greek citizen under Greek law.
